ACTRESS & PRODUCER
Known for her roles on Go Girls, Step Dave and of course as Shortland Street’s newest nurse, JJ is taking over our NZ screens! She is a woman of many talents producing Friday Night Bites, a spin-off from the web series Flat3, which she has co-created. We were lucky enough to catch JJ in between her crazy schedule to find out more about her story.
Describe yourself in three words.
Just honestly odd.
What got you started?
On life? Just being born really and then going through it like everyone else. On acting? Because I found something I was mildly OK at and make a living at the same time plus I enjoy it!

"You have to be mentally strong in this industry"
Talk us through a regular day in your life.
I wake up. Usually do some form of working out. I never know what happens in my day, if I’m lucky it ranges from being on amazing TV shows, to sitting on the couch at home watching The Mindy Project and baking cakes furiously researching other occupations sometimes littered with phone calls of auditions.
Usually the days are then scattered with several laments about what to eat for morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner then possibly dessert or just opening and closing the treat cupboard hoping each time I’ll find something different in there.
Being a dead body on The Brokenwood Mysteries...not so much a highlight as an experience I will never forget...
What do you love about your job?
That it is CHALLENGING. As much as I sometimes loathe the industry I also bloody love the industry which is why I stay in it. I’m an emotional eater basically.
One thing we would be surprised to know about you?
I eat an avocado a day.
Biggest challenge being a kiwi actress?
I think it’s the same all over the world - just landing the parts. You work really hard sometimes pulling off good auditions (in your mind) and then you just don’t get any work. That is the nature of it, massive highs and massive lows, you have to be mentally strong in this industry.
If you weren’t an actress, what would you be doing?
Probably sitting on the couch watching The Mindy Project haha.
What word do you use too much?
Top Instagram accounts to follow?
@constancezimmer from UnReal. She is my current fave actor of this year.
Can’t live without?
Reusable shopping bags and sunscreen.
Last thing you Googled?
How to spell Chaturanga...
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“If you aren’t in the arena also getting your ass kicked I’m not interested in your feedback”
- Brene Brown
My friend told me to read her book Daring Greatly and this is the quote that sums up the whole book.
"Sunscreen everyday, rain, hail or shine"
