Alex won 'The Block NZ' TV show in 2014 with her husband Corban, and since doing so has been incredibly busy. Her style is effortless and enviable, her quirky nature and relaxed manner quite unique. Juggling her own business, styling magazines, a baby, a husband, building a house and time for herself, every day is incredibly busy and long! Alex shares some of her style secrets and her story with us.
Can you tell us a little bit about what you have been up to since winning 'The Block NZ' 3 years ago?
I’ve started my own homewares store business called Alex and Corban Home, and we’ve also had a baby!

"A simple change of bed linen or cushions can instantly change a room’s feel"
What is the inspiration behind Alex and Corban Home?
I love how New Zealand is embracing taking pride in beautifully furnished and well thought out interiors for their houses. A simple change of bed linen or a piece of art on the wall can instantly change a room’s feel and with Alex & Corban Home we want to help people do that and feel proud about their own homes.
Talk us through what a regular day looks like for you.
Wake up and shower
Go for a walk with Austen
Mid morning meetings
Home for Austen’s sleep while I work
Put Austen to sleep
And then work from 7pm through to midnight!
With running a business and now being a full time mum, how do you find time to look after yourself?
It’s really tricky. I have found that routine is really important not only for Austen but for myself too. I make sure I go for a walk every day and if I get the timing right it allows me time to eat well and get jobs done in between the baby’s naps. Then the business at the moment is my night time job!
One thing that being a mum has taught you?
It’s taught me about my new priorities in life. To be there for my family, to stay fit and healthy for them, and it has also taught me how to selflessly love and care for someone in a way I could have never imagined.
How would you define your style?
Organic with use of lots of warm neutral hues. Minimalist design.
Easiest way to spruce up your interiors on a budget?
Something really simple to do is to change out the colours of your bed linen or a couple of cushions in a living space just making sure it follows a consistent colour story. It can be quite an easy way to change out the look and pretty cost effective.
Coffee or tea?
Classic or modern?
Little bit of both.
If you’re to invest in one item, what would you recommend?
I would recommend to invest in a really good, well made sofa because you spend a lot of time sitting on it and you’re probably going to have it for a long period of time since it’s such a significant item.

Tell us something about you that we would never expect.
I am a good singer and I’m addicted to eating Potato Chips.
Finally, what advice would you give someone hoping to start their own business?
You need to know what your strengths and weaknesses are. Don’t try and fulfill every role in your business for too long. If and when budget allows, employ people to do the things that don’t come natural to you, so that you can focus on the things that get you out of bed in the morning.
